Set up song requests

Let viewers queue songs with !sr, on YouTube or Spotify, and play them on stream.

YouTube works immediately with no setup. Spotify needs Spotify Premium, and usually a few minutes of one-time work.

YouTube (no setup)

  1. In the app, open Song Requests in the sidebar, under Community, and turn on Enable song requests.
  2. Under Sources, check Allow YouTube requests is on.
  3. Viewers type !sr followed by a link or a song name.
  4. Songs appear in the queue on that page. Its controls - Pause, Restart, Repeat, Next, Clear queue - drive the player you add to OBS below.

Playing songs on stream

  1. On the Song Requests page, open Browser source for OBS and click Copy.
  2. In OBS add a Browser source and paste the link.
  3. The player auto-advances through the queue and plays a fallback playlist when it is empty, so there is never dead air.

That player link is a secret URL, the same as an overlay link. Anyone with it can hear your player. Keep it out of screenshots, and use Reset to get a new one if it leaks.

Spotify

  1. You need Spotify Premium. The free tier cannot queue songs.
  2. GriddleBot's shared Spotify app only has room for a few accounts, so you will usually need your own - it is free. On the Song Requests page, open Use your own Spotify app. If the shared app has no room for you, it is already open and says so.
  3. Create an app at developer.spotify.com/dashboard, and set its Redirect URI to exactly the one shown on that page (use Copy).
  4. Do not skip the User Management step in Spotify's dashboard: Spotify blocks any account not on that list, and it lets you sign in BEFORE telling you.
  5. Paste the Client ID and Client Secret in and click Save, then click Connect Spotify under Sources and approve it.
  6. Once it is connected, turn on Allow Spotify requests.

Spotify needs something already playing to queue into. If you get "No active Spotify device", press play in Spotify first.
